Your Coop Is Built by Hand

Your structure enters production with the craftsmen at Bird-in-Hand Pet Structures. Built entirely by hand using traditional joinery, your coop is constructed from quality materials chosen for longevity — not just appearance. There is no factory line. Every structure is built as a single commission.

Delivered and Placed on Your Property

Your coop is transported to your property and placed directly in the location you have chosen. For larger structures, we use a shed mule — a specialized piece of equipment designed to navigate yards and position structures with precision. You are not required to be home, provided the site has been prepared and access is clear.

What to have ready
before your delivery date.

Our delivery team manages everything on our end. On your end, meeting the access and surface requirements below ensures your coop is placed correctly on the first visit — with no delays and no need for a return trip.

Surface Condition

Level Ground Required

Choose a placement area that is as level as possible before your delivery date. For larger coops, a gravel base is strongly recommended to support proper drainage and long-term structural stability.

Gravel base recommended for larger units

Overhead Clearance

Clear the Path Above

The full delivery route must be free of overhead obstructions. This includes power lines, tree branches, low-hanging eaves, or any structure that reduces vertical clearance along the access path.

13 feet minimum vertical clearance required

Driveway Access

Width for Safe Passage

Your driveway and access path must accommodate the width of the delivery vehicle. If the route includes tight turns, gates, or fencing, wider clearance is essential to navigate safely.

12 ft minimum — 14–16 ft preferred for turns

Gate & Fence Openings

Opening Width at Entry Points

Any gate or fence opening along the delivery path must be wide enough to allow safe passage of both the coop structure and the equipment used to place it.

Coop width + 24 inches minimum clearance

Access Path

Straight Run for the Vehicle

A clear, straight access path is required so the delivery truck can safely back in or exit without obstruction from parked vehicles, landscaping features, or other structures.

60–70 feet of straight, unobstructed clearance

Delivery FAQ

Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most before delivery day.

Do I need to be home when my Hen House coop is delivered? +
No. As long as your site is prepared and accessible per the requirements on this page, our team can complete delivery and placement without you present. We confirm all details with you in advance so delivery day goes smoothly and without any questions on-site.
How long does it take to receive a Hen House Collection coop? +
From order to delivery, expect a 3–6 week window. This covers the full build time with our Amish craftsmen in Lancaster, PA, plus freight coordination and delivery to your property. This timeline is consistent across all sizes in the Hen House Collection.
Which states do you deliver the Hen House Collection to? +
The Hen House Collection ships to all 48 contiguous United States. Alaska and Hawaii are not currently supported for this collection. Kit-based products — the Smart Coop and Chicken Coop Co. — ship via FedEx and UPS. Contact us directly if you have questions about your specific location.
What is a shed mule and will one be used for my delivery? +
A shed mule is a piece of specialized delivery equipment designed to move large structures across a property with precision — navigating yards, moving around obstacles, and placing structures in exact locations. It may be used for larger Hen House Collection coops to ensure accurate, damage-free placement wherever you have chosen.
Do I need to prepare a gravel base before my coop arrives? +
A level surface is required for all Hen House deliveries. For larger coops, a gravel base is strongly recommended prior to delivery — it supports proper drainage beneath the structure and contributes significantly to long-term stability. This is something you would arrange before your scheduled delivery date.
Do kit coops include tools and assembly instructions? +
Yes. Every Smart Coop and Chicken Coop Co. kit ships with all required hardware, the necessary tools, printed assembly instructions, and access to step-by-step video guides. You do not need to source any additional materials or equipment before beginning your build.
Who do I contact if I have a question about my delivery? +
