Leghorn Cottage Chicken Coop for 4 to 6 Chickens — Starter Kit by The Chicken Coop Company
The Leghorn Cottage is The Chicken Coop Company's most popular starter coop — a compact, well-engineered backyard chicken coop kit designed for small flocks of 4 to 6 hens. Built from non-splintering fir timber with heavy-gauge hardware and preinstalled wire mesh, this is a coop built to a standard that most small backyard coops simply do not meet. It ships free via FedEx in two boxes and arrives with pre-labeled components and pre-drilled pilot holes, backed by The Chicken Coop Company's own step-by-step instructional videos.
This coop works wonderfully for backyard chickens, ducks, quail, or pheasant — making it one of the most versatile small flock options on the market. The sliding metal handle hen house door makes securing your birds at night quick and effortless, and 15 inches of clearance beneath the hen house provides additional roaming space for your flock throughout the day.
Before settling on a bird count, keep in mind that chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on roosting rods. Breed size and whether your flock has access to free ranging will influence how many birds this space comfortably supports. If you are still working out the right fit, our chicken math sizing guide walks you through exactly how to evaluate coop space for your specific flock before you buy.
Thoughtful Engineering in a Compact Footprint
The Leghorn Cottage measures 76 inches long by 31.5 inches wide — a smart, space-efficient footprint for smaller backyards without sacrificing interior comfort for your flock. The coop includes 2 roosting rods, 15 inches of clearance under the hen house, and three entrance doors to the run giving you easy access to every section of the floor space below. That level of access makes cleaning straightforward and letting your girls out for free ranging a daily habit rather than a chore.
One of the standout engineering details on the Leghorn Cottage is that the chicken run extends underneath the nesting box. Many competing coops sold online skip this entirely — and without that support, nesting boxes begin to sag in a very short period of time. It is one of the most telling signs of a well-built coop versus one that will not hold up. If you want to understand what separates durable coop construction from the rest, our guide on why some chicken coops fail early breaks down exactly what to look for.
Heavy plastic flashing sits above the nest box roof panel, and each roof panel includes a hard plastic lining for additional weatherproofing and insulation. All heavy-gauge wire mesh comes preinstalled on the panels before shipping, so assembly is focused on putting the structure together rather than wrestling with wire.
Free Shipping via FedEx — Arrives in Two Boxes
The Leghorn Cottage ships completely free via FedEx in two boxes. Box one measures 29 by 11 by 40 inches at 49 pounds. Box two measures 32 by 8 by 48 inches at 50 pounds. Every piece is pre-labeled, pilot holes are pre-drilled, and The Chicken Coop Company's instructions are written in-house for clarity. A power screwdriver and roughly an hour is all it takes to get this coop standing.
Built for Comfort, Safety, and Long-Term Flock Health
The Leghorn Cottage is built to keep your flock safe with heavy-gauge wire mesh, solid panel construction with diagonal wooden supports on every panel, and secure hardware throughout. The acrylic sliding window provides reliable ventilation without the swelling and sticking issues that come with wood-framed windows over time. Predator pressure is one of the most important factors to plan for when keeping backyard hens — our predator-proofing guide covers the steps you can take beyond the coop itself to keep your flock protected. For additional security, The Chicken Coop Company also offers a predator-proof kit, a chicken waterer for consistent hydration, and a safe coop heater for winter warmth.
Expandable Over Time
The Leghorn Cottage is compatible with run extensions, allowing you to grow your setup as your flock expands. Please note this coop is not compatible with automatic chicken guard door openers listed on The Chicken Coop Company's site.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many chickens can the Leghorn Cottage comfortably house?
The Leghorn Cottage is designed for 4 to 6 hens. Final capacity depends on breed size, whether your birds free range, and how much time they spend confined. Chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on roosting rods. Our chicken math sizing guide can help you evaluate the right fit before purchasing.
Is this delivered assembled or as a kit?
The Leghorn Cottage is a flat-packed assembly kit. It ships via FedEx in two pre-labeled boxes with pre-drilled pilot holes. The Chicken Coop Company provides step-by-step instructional videos to guide you through the build. Most customers complete assembly in about an hour with a power screwdriver.
Does it ship for free?
Yes. The Leghorn Cottage ships completely free via FedEx to addresses in the contiguous United States. There are no handling fees, surcharges, or surprises at checkout.
What tools do I need for assembly?
A power screwdriver and approximately one hour is all that is needed. Every piece is pre-labeled, pilot holes are pre-drilled, and all heavy-gauge wire mesh comes preinstalled on the panels before shipping.
Can this coop house ducks, quail, or pheasant?
Yes. The Leghorn Cottage works well for backyard chickens, ducks, quail, and pheasant, making it one of the more versatile small flock options available.
Why does the run extend under the nesting box?
The run extension beneath the nesting box provides critical structural support. Many competing coops skip this detail entirely — and without that support, nesting boxes sag and deteriorate quickly. This is one of the key construction differences between a coop that lasts and one that does not. Our guide on why chicken coops fail early explains exactly why this detail matters.
Is this coop compatible with automatic door openers?
No. The Leghorn Cottage is not compatible with the automatic chicken guard door openers listed on The Chicken Coop Company's site.
How do I predator-proof the Leghorn Cottage?
The coop is built with heavy-gauge wire mesh, solid panel construction, and secure hardware throughout. The optional predator-proof kit is available as an add-on for elevated security. For a full breakdown of what predator-proofing looks like beyond the coop itself, visit our predator-proofing guide.
Can I expand this setup later?
Yes. The Leghorn Cottage is compatible with run extensions, allowing you to grow your coop configuration as your flock expands over time.
What accessories pair well with the Leghorn Cottage?
This coop pairs well with a dedicated chicken waterer for consistent hydration, a safe coop heater for winter warmth, and the predator-proof kit for added flock security and peace of mind.

Our family is only 1 year into chicken experience and we have learned alot! We have 8 hens (no roosters!) and the prior coop we had was too small. The impacts of the coop being too small is that many times chickens would hang out after the auto door closed at night so we needed to manually grab them and put them in. The other impact of the smaller coop is that chickens would fly up on it and poop on it. Having this bigger coop allows it to look nicer because it is taller and the chickens can't fly up to the roof and poop on it, and it is bigger which I think makes it easier for all chickens to go in at night by themselves before the automatic door closes. So this coop purchased from you has been a better size and so far a better experience but we are only a few weeks into it. The installation was fine, but the only challenge is that we bought an auto door separately and we had to make modifications to make it fit.
Well built chicken coop but definitely not meant for 4 or more chickens unless they're bantams or free range during the day as it's very small. Nesting boxes are roomy and I like the vent for airflow.
Love my new Leghorn coop! The folks at chicken coop went out of their way to make sure my delivery was on time. Assembly went as directed, video was most helpful. (Boxes are heavy, I put pieces on driveway and carried to assembly area). The predator kit is a must have, once it's down you will feel better about keeping other critters out. (including little white dogs) Coop is sturdy and my girls seem to be content. I plan on adding on more run space but for now we're all good. Cost for value I give it a 5 star rating.
